5 Magnet Fishing Accessories You Should Own

Brute Magnetics Boss 360 Bundle

We discussed in detail popular fishing magnets in our ultimate magnet fishing guide and in previous articles, however we haven’t really addressed which magnet fishing accessories you should be using.

Whilst we won’t go over old ground here regarding fishing magnets, we do recommend that you have several magnets in your inventory and that you have at least one double sided magnet. The size and weight of your fishing magnets will depend on many factors as well as the location of where you are going magnet fishing.

If you haven’t made a selection with your magnet fishing magnets below we have some basic fishing magnet recommendations:

Now that you have your magnets sorted, let’s get into the 5 magnet fishing accessories you should own.

1. Rope for Magnet Fishing

Aside from the magnet itself, having a strong rope attached to your magnet is your most important piece of magnet fishing equipment.Having the wrong rope strength or wrong rope length will leave you with a disappointing magnet fishing experience at best, at worst you could lose your expensive magnet and have to replace this.

When looking for some suitable rope for magnet fishing some of the important points you need to take into account when selecting your rope should include:

  • What is the weight of your magnet?
  • Approximately how deep is the water or how high above the water will you be where you are going to go magnet fishing?
  • What items are you anticipating you’ll be pulling up during your magnet fishing expeditions?

Other important points when choosing your rope for magnet fishing include the type of rope material (you’ll want a material that doesn’t deteriorate too much due to the water) and the thickness of the rope you will be choosing. The material we recommend is a rope made of nylon paracord or polyester material, something strong that is used to hold heavy equipment or for safety use such as climbing ropes.

Whilst there are plenty of quality rope for magnet fishing options on the market, our preferred option is the  Brute Magnetics Magnet Fishing Rope.

You’ll also want to make sure your carabiner is strong and you also have a spare one.

2. Gloves for Magnet Fishing

An underrated accessory for magnet fishing is a quality pair of gloves. Whilst it’s not critical to own a pair of gloves for magnet fishing if you are looking to magnet fish with heavy magnets and looking to go after large items for your safety we highly recommend a quality pair of gloves when you go magnet fishing.

Ideally you’ll want a high quality pair of gloves however you also need to balance this up with your budget. Where possible some of the qualities you’ll want in your gloves include:

  • Polyethylene material or something similar
  • Ability to move fingers and hands
  • Lightweight
  • Cut and Puncture Resistant

While the glove doesn’t necessarily need to be magnet fishing specific they can be a high quality garden type glove or something similar.

3. Magnet Fishing Pole/Net

Depending on where you are looking to go magnet fishing it may not be enough to just have your magnet and rope. You may need additional help to get your catch up from harder to reach locations and to do this you could investigate adding a magnet fishing pole/net to your accessories.

When looking at a magnet fishing pole/net there are several points look at before making a purchase, some of these include:

  • Where are you going to go magnet fishing?
  • What are the conditions of this magnet fishing location?
  • What material do you want your magnet fishing pole/net to be made of?
  • How long do you want your magnet fishing pole/net or do you want it collapsible?

That being said you’ll want your pole/net made of sturdy material particularly if you are looking to target heavy objects when magnet fishing, similar to what is used with fishing though if you are to find bigger objects such as car parts they may be too big for your net.

4. Grappling Hook for Magnet Fishing

When magnet fishing in tricky terrain or where you are hunting heavier objectives, sometimes you need a little additional help when getting your magnet fishing catch out of the water. For some people they may use another person or another magnet, for others their preferred method is using a grappling hook.

When choosing your preferred grappling hook for magnet fishing a couple of points you need to take into account include:

  • How big are the items you are looking at targeting when magnet fishing?
  • What are the conditions of this magnet fishing location, i.e. lots of trees and other wildlife?
  • What material do you want your magnet fishing grappling hook to be made of?
  • How big do you want your grappling hook or do you want it collapsable to reduce carry size?

5. Cleaning equipment for Magnet Fishing

Last but not least, we look at accessories that you won’t use when magnet fishing but will keep your magnet fishing magnets at its peak for many years to come. While you should thoroughly clean all your equipment with water after every fishing trip, with your magnets we recommend you use a little more care when cleaning.

Given your magnet is spending lots of time in the water it’s going to rust however with proper care and maintenance you will minimize the rust potential and keep your magnet at a quality level for many years to come.

We recommend you take a small plastic scraper and microfibre towel with you when magnet fishing and as soon as you have finished magnet fishing on location take out the plastic scraper and scrape anything stuck to the magnet, then take the microfibre towel and give your magnet a thorough wipe down.

Now when you get home, we recommend you clean your magnet with soapy water and use a small brush or toothbrush to clean out the crevices of your magnet and magnet the quality of your magnet for future use.

For some magnet fishers they use soapy water or detergent to clean their magnets, while others prefer to use other cleaning agents to keep their magnets in top working order.

When transporting your magnet to and from fishing we recommend you transport it in a protective covering such as a styrofoam or simple foam covering so that the magnet does attract a metal object on the way to magnet fishing.

We recommend a quality small plastic scraper and microfibre towel to take with your magnet fishing and when cleaning at home using a small brush or toothbrush with soapy water.

Bonus recommended Item: Winch

For the heavy duty magnet fisher a more luxurious accessory that some magnet fishers use is a winch. Usually this is attached to a 4wd or a stable base and helps to pull your find from the water. The next step up from a grappling hook, a winch is a luxury accessory that only the hardcore magnet fishers would need to invest in.  An example of a motorized winch is a Reindeer 12V Winch with a 9500 lb load

While a simple magnet and rope will be suitable for many magnet fishers, adding in one or all of the above magnet fishing accessories will make your magnet fishing experience a lot more enjoyable. Make sure you do your research, use our suggestions above as a guide and go out and build your magnet fishing kit to enhance your magnet fishing experience and your fun.
